광복절, 춤으로 이어가는 그날의 함성

해마다 8월이 되면 한미무용연합 진발레스쿨은 바빠진다. 광복절을 기념하는 무대를 준비하기 위해서다. 해마다 반복되는 행사이지만 무대를 준비할 때마다 마음은 새롭다. 우리가 누리는 자유의 의미와 그 역사를 다음 세대에게 어떻게 전할 것인가를 다시 생각하게 되기 때문이다.

올해로 광복 81주년. 긴 세월이 흘렀지만 역사는 기억하는 사람들의 마음속에서 계속 이어진다. 나에게 그 기억을 이어가는 방법은 춤이다.

지난 8월 15일 토요일 오전 11시, 로스앤젤레스한인회 주최로 남가주새누리교회에서 열린 제81주년 광복절 기념행사에 한미무용연합회와 진발레스쿨 25명의 단원들이 함께 무대에 올랐다.

이날 두 작품을 선보였다. 첫 번째 ‘그날의 함성, 잊지 않으리’는 나라를 잃었던 아픔과 자유를 향한 간절함, 태극기를 흔들며 외쳤던 광복의 벅찬 순간을 3분의 춤에 담았다. 짧은 시간이지만 음악과 몸짓, 태극기가 하나가 되면서 오래전 역사가 오늘의 무대에서 다시 살아났다.

두 번째 ‘자유로 하나가 되어’는 미래를 이야기하는 작품이다. 어린아이들이 발레복을 입고 한국과 미국 국기를 들고 춤을 추며, 한국이라는 뿌리와 미국이라는 삶의 터전이 하나로 이어지는 모습을 표현했다. 자유의 의미를 이어받은 새로운 세대가 서로 화합하며 밝은 미래를 만들어 가기를 바라는 마음을 담았다.

첫 번째 작품이 우리가 잊지 말아야 할 과거를 기억하는 춤이라면, 두 번째 작품은 그 기억을 품고 미래를 향해 나아가는 춤이다. 기억해야 할 역사가 있기에 오늘의 자유가 있고, 오늘의 자유가 있기에 아이들이 꿈꿀 내일이 있다.

춤에는 말이 없다. 그러나 때로는 한 번의 몸짓이 수많은 말보다 더 깊은 이야기를 전한다. 이것이 내가 춤을 통해 역사를 이야기하는 이유다.

해마다 광복절 공연을 준비하며 가장 큰 보람을 느끼는 것도 여기에 있다. 특히 미국에서 자라는 아이들이 직접 태극기를 들고 춤추며 광복의 의미와 자신의 뿌리를 자연스럽게 알아간다. 춤을 배우는 시간이 곧 역사를 배우는 시간이 되는 것이다. 공연은 몇 분이면 끝난다. 음악이 멈추면 춤도 끝난다. 그러나 그 짧은 순간에 아이들과 관객의 마음에 남겨진 기억은 쉽게 사라지지 않는다.

춤은 순간의 예술이지만, 그 순간은 과거를 기억하게 하고 오늘을 돌아보게 하며 미래를 꿈꾸게 한다. 그날의 함성을 잊지 않고, 자유로 하나가 되어 다음 세대로 이어가는 것. 그것이 우리가 해마다 광복절에 다시 춤추는 이유다.

Liberation Day: Carrying Forward the Cries of That Historic Day Through Dance

Every August, the KOA Dance Federation and Jean Ballet School become especially busy preparing a performance commemorating Korean Liberation Day. Although it is an annual event, each year’s preparations feel new. They give us another opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the freedom we enjoy and how we can pass its history on to the next generation.

This year marks the 81st anniversary of Korea’s liberation. Although many decades have passed, history continues to live in the hearts of those who remember it. For me, dance is the way to keep that memory alive.

On Saturday, August 15, at 11:00 a.m., twenty-five dancers from the KOA Dance Federation and Jean Ballet School took the stage at the 81st Korean Liberation Day Commemoration, hosted by the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles at Saenuri Church of Southern California.

We presented two works that day. The first, “We Will Never Forget the Cries of That Day,” portrayed the sorrow of losing one’s country, the desperate longing for freedom, and the overwhelming joy of liberation as people waved the Taegeukgi and cried out in celebration—all expressed through three minutes of dance. Though brief, the performance brought history to life on today’s stage as the music, movement, and Korean flags became one.

The second work, “United Through Freedom,” looked toward the future. Young children dressed in ballet costumes danced while holding the flags of Korea and the United States, expressing how their Korean roots and their lives in America are connected as one. The work carried our hope that a new generation, having inherited the meaning of freedom, will live in harmony and build a brighter future together.

If the first work was a dance remembering the past we must never forget, the second was a dance moving toward the future while carrying that memory forward. Because there is history to remember, we enjoy freedom today; and because we have freedom today, our children can dream of tomorrow.

Dance has no spoken words. Yet sometimes a single movement can convey a story more deeply than countless words. This is why I tell the story of history through dance.

It is also where I find the greatest fulfillment each year as we prepare our Liberation Day performance. Children growing up in the United States hold the Taegeukgi in their own hands and dance, naturally learning about the meaning of Korea’s liberation and discovering their cultural roots. Their time learning dance also becomes a time for learning history.

A performance ends within minutes. When the music stops, the dance also comes to an end. Yet the memories left in the hearts of the children and the audience during those brief moments do not easily fade.

Dance is an art of the moment, but that moment allows us to remember the past, reflect upon the present, and dream of the future. We dance again every Korean Liberation Day so that we will never forget the cries of that historic day and so that, united through freedom, we may carry their meaning forward to the next generation.
