해마다 6월이 되면 한미무용연합 진발레스쿨이 빠지지 않고 참석하는 행사가 있다. 바로 한국전쟁 6·25 참전용사 기념행사이다. 올해도 어김없이 초청을 받았다. 월드컵 응원 행사와 각종 공연으로 가장 바쁜 시기지만 이 행사만큼은 반드시 참석한다. 우리 민족의 역사와 아픔을 다음 세대에게 전하고, 참전용사들의 희생에 감사의 마음을 전하는 소중한 자리이기 때문이다.
공연을 준비하던 중 LA에서 태어나 자라고 있는 여섯 살 한인 2세 학생이 내게 물었다. "선생님, 한국전쟁이 뭐예요?" 나는 아이의 눈높이에 맞춰 "아주 오래전에 한국에서 전쟁이 있었고 많은 사람들이 나라를 지키기 위해 희생했단다. 그래서 오늘 우리가 자유롭게 살아갈 수 있는 거야"라고 설명해 주었다. 하지만 어린아이에게 전쟁의 의미를 모두 이해시키기란 쉽지 않은 일이다. 그래서 "오늘 행사에 가면 더 잘 알게 될 거야"라고 덧붙였다.
퍼시픽 팰리세이즈 재향군인회관에서 열린 한국전쟁 76주년 기념행사에는 한국과 미국의 참전용사들, 가족들, 지역사회 인사들이 함께했다. 행사장에서는 한국전쟁의 역사와 희생을 담은 영상이 상영되었고, 기념사와 감사 영상이 이어졌다. 학생들은 진지한 표정으로 영상을 바라보며 역사 속 이야기에 귀를 기울였다.
특히 한국과 미국의 참전용사들이 서로 반갑게 재회하는 모습이 인상적이었다. 자유를 위해 헌신했던 분들이 서로의 건강을 기원하며 따뜻하게 인사를 나누는 모습에서 깊은 감동을 느꼈다. 그분들의 희생과 헌신이 있었기에 오늘의 대한민국이 존재하고, 우리가 자유롭게 살아가며 예술 활동을 할 수 있다는 사실을 다시 한번 생각하게 되었다.
이날 학생들과 함께한 무대에서는 한미 우정의 깃발, 카르멘, 독도는 우리 땅이 공연되었다. 여섯 살 어린 학생들부터 시니어 단원들까지 세대를 아우르는 출연자들이 한 무대에 서서 감사와 존경의 마음을 전했다. 그날의 무대는 단순한 공연이 아니라 역사를 배우고, 봉사의 가치를 나누며, 세대 간의 화합을 경험하는 살아있는 교육의 현장이었다. 지역사회를 위해 늘 함께해 주시는 모든 분들께 깊은 감사를 드린다. 그날 우리는 예술이 사람과 사람을 연결하고 공동체를 하나로 묶어주는 힘을 다시 한번 확인할 수 있었다.
또한 해마다 뜻깊은 행사를 준비해 주시는 대한민국 육군협회 관계자 여러분께도 존경과 감사의 마음을 전한다. 나라를 사랑하는 마음과 참전용사들에 대한 존경이 없다면 오랜 세월 이러한 행사를 이어간다는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아닐 것이다. 무엇보다 바쁜 주말에도 기꺼이 시간을 내어 함께해 주신 학부모님들께 감사드린다. 사업과 가정의 일을 뒤로하고 아이들과 함께 봉사에 참여하는 모습은 아이들에게 무엇보다 좋은 교육이 되었을 것이다.
공연 후에는 봉사 공로상을 받는 뜻깊은 시간도 있었다. 그러나 그 상은 학생들과 실버 발레팀, 학부모님들, 그리고 함께 봉사한 모든 분들과 나누고 싶다. 그날 우리는 단순히 무대에 오른 것이 아니었다. 역사를 배우고, 감사를 전하고, 봉사의 의미를 나누었다. 무엇보다 우리 아이들은 자신이 누구인지, 어디에서 왔는지, 그리고 왜 우리의 역사를 기억해야 하는지를 조금씩 배워가는 시간을 가졌다.
어쩌면 그것이 우리가 예술을 통해 지역사회와 함께하는 이유일 것이다. 우리의 역사를 기억하고, 우리의 정체성을 지키며, 감사의 마음을 다음 세대에 전하기 위해서. 그리고 그 기억 속에서 우리를 잊지 않기 위해서..
Every June, there is one event that KOA Dance Federation and Jean Ballet School never miss: the Korean War Veterans Commemoration Ceremony. This year, as always, we were honored to receive an invitation. Although June is one of our busiest months with World Cup cheering events and numerous performances, this is one occasion we make every effort to attend. It is a meaningful opportunity to pass on the history and sacrifices of our nation to the next generation and to express our gratitude to the veterans who served.
While preparing for the performance, a six-year-old Korean American student who was born and raised in Los Angeles asked me, “Teacher, what was the Korean War?” I explained in a way that a child could understand: “A long time ago, there was a war in Korea, and many people sacrificed their lives to protect their country. Because of them, we can live freely today.” Yet it is not easy for a young child to fully understand the meaning of war. So I added, “When you attend today’s ceremony, you will understand a little more.”
The 76th Anniversary Korean War Commemoration, held at the Pacific Palisades Veterans Memorial Building, brought together Korean and American veterans, their families, and members of the local community. The program included videos documenting the history and sacrifices of the Korean War, followed by commemorative speeches and messages of gratitude. The students watched attentively, listening to stories from history with sincere interest and respect.
One of the most moving moments was seeing Korean and American veterans warmly greeting one another. These men and women, who had dedicated themselves to the cause of freedom, exchanged heartfelt wishes for good health and happiness. Witnessing their reunion reminded us that their courage and sacrifice made today’s Republic of Korea possible and allowed us to live freely and pursue artistic expression.
Our students presented three performances during the ceremony: The Flag of Korean-American Friendship, Carmen, and Dokdo Is Our Land. From six-year-old children to senior dancers, performers of different generations shared the stage to express gratitude and respect. The performance was far more than entertainment. It became a living classroom where students learned history, experienced the value of community service, and witnessed the beauty of intergenerational unity. We are deeply grateful to everyone who continually supports our community through their participation and service. That day reminded us once again that art has the power to connect people and strengthen communities.
I would also like to express my sincere appreciation and respect to the members of the Republic of Korea Army Association, who faithfully organize this meaningful event every year. Without a deep love for the country and genuine respect for Korean War veterans, it would be impossible to sustain such a commemorative tradition over so many years. Most importantly, I thank the parents who generously gave their time on a busy weekend to participate alongside their children. Setting aside personal and professional responsibilities to serve the community provided a valuable lesson that no classroom could fully teach.
Following the performances, I was honored to receive a Community Service Award. However, that recognition truly belongs to our students, the Silver Ballet Team, the parents, and everyone who volunteered and participated. We did much more than perform on stage that day. We learned history, expressed gratitude, and shared the meaning of service. Most importantly, our children gained a deeper understanding of who they are, where they come from, and why it is important to remember our history.
Perhaps that is the very reason we continue to serve our community through the arts: to preserve our history, protect our cultural identity, and pass on a spirit of gratitude to future generations. Through remembrance, we honor those who came before us—and ensure that we never forget who we are.
