The Shopping-Addicted Woman Who Divorced Twice, and the Third Man I Introduced to Her

“I was thrown out naked more than once. I was beaten, too.”

A woman sat in front of me with tears welling up in her eyes.

She was a woman I had helped marry a few years earlier. In this business, when people are living well, we usually hear nothing from them. If someone comes back, it is rarely good news.

“My husband left me. I know I did wrong, but he went too far.”

Her husband had been a civil servant. He was diligent and had a decent personality.

But she said the marriage had been hell. Later, I heard the story from her husband as well. At the center of the problem was her shopping addiction.

Clothes. Bags. Cosmetics.

She was not buying them because she needed them. She bought and bought again.

She even borrowed a friend’s credit card, and then borrowed more money to pay off the card bills. In the end, the two divorced.

A few years later, she came back to see me. She was still in her late 30s. She was pretty and had a good impression.

I thought to myself: She still has a chance.

But this time, the problem could not be solved simply by choosing the right man. She had to have the will to overcome her shopping addiction.

I chose her remarriage partner very carefully. He was a businessman who was meticulous, detail-oriented, and strict about money management.

I also spoke honestly to the man.

“This woman has had a shopping problem. You need to know that and be able to help manage that part of life together.”

When a woman is beautiful, many things tend to be forgiven.

The two married. This time, I truly hoped they would live well.

But a few years later, she appeared again.

Her second marriage had also ended. Once again, the problem was her shopping addiction.

Her second husband, too, had eventually been unable to handle it.

Then she said to me again,

“Representative Lee, please introduce me to one more good man. Someone a little more financially comfortable.”

For a while, I could not answer.

I thought to myself: Maybe this woman does not need to change the man. Maybe she needs to change her environment.

Just then, one man came to mind.

He had lost his wife, his children had all moved out, and he was living alone in the countryside near Jirisan Mountain. Financially, he was comfortable. But he lived far from the city.

There were no department stores.

No shopping malls.

No luxury boutiques.

He was a man who lived peacefully in such a place.

That was the man I thought of.

I said to her,

“How about meeting a man like this this time?”

She looked at his profile for a long while and then said,

“How could I live there? I think I would feel too suffocated.”

I said,

“That is exactly why I am recommending him. You would have to forget city life and live there. That may be the only way the rest of your life can become peaceful.”

Then I added, half joking,

“This time, if you want to go shopping, you would have to come down from the mountain first.”

She laughed for a moment.

After that day, I never heard from her again. Perhaps she is receiving another introduction somewhere else.

I sometimes think about it.

What if she had met that man in Jirisan at least once?

The third remarriage partner I recommended to a shopping-addicted woman was not a richer man.

It was a man who lived in a place where there was nowhere to shop.
