Iowa family of 4 found dead in Mexican resort condominium
Family previously reported missing before bodies found
CRESTON, Iowa (KCCI) —
An Iowa couple and their two young children were found dead in a rented condominium in Mexico, authorities said.
The Sharp family was reported missing by relatives in their hometown of Creston early Friday, about a week after the family left for vacation.
The State Department’s website, which was updated last month, advises Americans to “exercise increased caution due to crime.”
Homicides in the region where Tulum is located, Quintana Roo, have increased compared with the same period in 2016, according Mexican government statistics, most of which seemed to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations.
The turf battles between the criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens, the website said.
The Mexico Tourism Board said in a statement it is aware of the ongoing investigation and “we would like to express our sympathies to all family and friends of the Sharp family. The entire Mexico tourism industry offers its support and commitment to finding out what happened.”
The board said it wants to remind travelers who go to Quintana Roo - - which includes Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Rivera Maya - - remains “a safe place to visit and there are no increased levels of threats observed at this time.”
The Sharps were well-known supporters of the Southwestern Community College basketball team. According to family members, they were supposed to return from Mexico on Wednesday, arrive in St. Louis and travel to Danville, Illinois, for a game.
The college said in a statement that it “would like to extend our deepest condolences.”
“While the game will go on, our hearts and minds will also be occupied with thoughts of all you are enduring at this time,” the college said. “Much love from your Southwestern basketball family."
